The 4th Congressional District Democratic Executive Committee reports on a successful first-ever virtual 4th Congressional District Democratic Convention.
Acting in accordance with a contingency plan approved by the North Carolina Democratic Party, the 4th Congressional District Democratic Convention was postponed to May 16, 2020 and held in a virtual format. This contingency plan aligned with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and exercised best efforts to protect the health and well-being of North Carolinians amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite these changes, the 4th Congressional District Democratic Convention remained one of the marquee events of the Democratic organizing season in North Carolina. The convention served as an official venue for the election of a Democratic Presidential Elector, four Delegates to the Democratic National Convention pledged to Vice President Joe Biden, three pledged to Senator Bernie Sanders, and two pledged to Senator Elizabeth Warren. Election results depict many close races, including several contests that required numerous rounds of ranked choice ballot tabulation. These close results further evidence the strength of the district's slate of candidates. The delegates to the 4th Congressional District Democratic Convention elected nine delegates to the Democratic National Convention, more than any other congressional district in the state. Special congratulations to:
Former state Senator Doug Berger, Wake County Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisor Nervahna Crew, state Senator Valerie Foushee, and Hillsborough Commissioner Matt Hughes on their respective elections to represent the district as delegates to the Democratic National Convention pledged to Vice President Joe Biden
Durham County Commissioner-elect Nida Allam, Rebecca Cerese, and Italo Medelius Marsano on their respective elections to represent the district as delegates to the Democratic National Convention pledged to Senator Bernie Sanders
Carl Newman and Ebony West on their respective elections to represent the district as delegates to the Democratic National Convention pledged to Senator Elizabeth Warren
Special congratulations also goes out to Fatimah Hickman, who won a close election to serve the district as an official Democratic Presidential Elector. Despite some initial technical difficulties, the 4th Congressional District Democratic Executive Committee was pleased to report that the 4th Congressional District exhibited the highest level of convention attendance and demonstrated the highest level of participation in district elections, when compared to other Congressional District Democratic Conventions held virtually around the state. Perhaps most noteworthy, over 90% of eligible delegates to the 4th Congressional District Democratic Convention voted in the district elections.
